James Joyce (1882–1941) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and short-story writer. His works include Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake.
All Joyce’s writings are set in his native Dublin, although from 1904 onwards he lived mainly in continental Europe – Trieste, Zurich and Paris – with his partner, Nora Barnacle; they had two children.
His writings, particularly Ulysses, have been hugely influential; Joyce is recognized worldwide as a leading figure in the development of the novel. He died in Zurich at the age of 59.
